Reflection: Lessons from Weaving in Mathematics

I enjoyed learning how mathematics is applied to weaving, and I think it’s super interesting to see how the craft makes use of both logistics and creativity to create a piece like that. To think that an extensive system similar to what is used with our technology today was already in existence at that time is mind blowing, and something that I just would not have expected from that time considering how long it’s taken for us to get to this point in technology. The cultural practices in my culture that may promote mathematics teaching include games such as Ampe. A foot game with two players that makes use of the probability theorem. There’s also the game Oware, similar to Mancala where the math involved uses counting. Lastly, the obvious weaving of Kente is a core part of the Ghanaian culture.
